The Impact Letter

The idea is to combine the cover letter, reference letter, and resume into one letter. This is another job search tool to use with your other job search activities.

The main purpose is to give the reader (a person with hiring authority) everything on one page. This job search tool does not replace your need for a resume; you will still need a resume for the interview and/or to provide if one is requested.

The impact letter can be written by you about yourself, but it’s more effective if it’s from a person who holds some position of authority. If this person works in the type of business which is the target of your letter, the impact is greater.

When the letter is from another person, you will still write the letter and say good things about yourself. The impact letter is developed with an understanding that the person of authority:
  • agrees to sign the letter (send under their name),
  • will repeat the good things stated in the letter about you, and
  • will answer questions about your capabilities and recommend you.

It is your responsibility to follow-up the letter, conduct yourself in a professional manner, and begin the networking process with the person targeted by the letter.

For an impact letter to be most effective, it should come from someone such as a company owner/president, a professor, a business manager, a recognized leader in the community, etc. This professional status will add weight to your letter.

It is important that the person knows you well enough to answer questions about your skills, abilities and is able to tell why the person targeted should interview you. If you are unable to obtain a sponsor for your impact letter, send it yourself under your own name; it will still provide an employer with your best skills and abilities.

There are four sections to this type of letter:
  • The first paragraph must give the reader a sales pitch that reflects a need the employer has and then lead into the presentation of your ability to fill the need.
  • The middle section of the letter is your name, degree (if one of your strong sales points), and a list of your functional skills areas.
  • The third paragraph includes a short work history, and a brief explanation as to why the person who thinks you are such a good candidate is not hiring you.
  • The last paragraph indicates that you will contact the reader and offers to answer questions or provide more information. It is important to include the writer's telephone number and contact times.
Do not write a long letter or use small print, this will increase the likelihood the reader will read your letter carefully.
